Project Background
The SF Railyards site is owned by Prologis (a real estate company). Caltrain has an easement to use the site for rail operations. Today, Caltrain uses the site as a major regional station, as well as for train storage and maintenance. Prologis and Caltrain have been working together to establish a plan for how the rail and development can come together and transform the site, enhancing transit service, connections, and the neighborhood.
Project Phasing
How Rail and Buildings Come Together
The Portal Project is an underground rail extension from 4th and King Station to the Salesforce Transit Center. Coming from the south, Caltrain trains will transition underground as they enter the western end of the Railyards site, serving a new station under 4th and Townsend Streets before continuing onward to Salesforce Transit Center.
The Portal project and relocation of the existing rail maintenance and storage facilities on the site will open up the site for development as a mixed-use neighborhood.
Related Infrastructure Projects
The SF Railyards plan sits at the intersection of numerous planned and proposed infrastructure projects including the Portal, the Pennsylvania Avenue Extension (PAX) and California High Speed Rail (CAHSR) projects. The SF Railyards team is collaborating closely with all parties to develop a vision that unlocks the site’s potential.
What will the plan include?
A New World-Class Train Station
An Estimated 2,500 New Homes
Including affordable and market-rate
Welcoming Parks and Plazas
An Estimated 4 Million Square Feet
Of office and retail development
Comfortable Streets
For bikes & pedestrians
Preliminary Concepts - to be refined through project development
How Has Community Input Shaped the Plan?
Extensive community engagement has helped to inform the vision for the site, and we continue to welcome your input as we refine the details.
What’s Next for SF Railyards?
The SF Railyards team is continuing to collaborate closely with agency partners, and conducting further community engagement to keep moving the project forward.
Approvals & Environmental Review
Before any construction can begin, the San Francisco Railyards plan must complete the environmental review process, and all approvals with the City of San Francisco.
Community outreach will continue throughout the entitlement process. We will continue to collect your input to refine the vision and details for the mixed-use neighborhood at the site.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts at an upcoming event!
